How was the study on obesity and height in children carried out?

The research analyzed data from more than five million children aged 3 to 10, born between 2001 and 2014.

This data was collected from important sources such as the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico), the Live Birth Information System (Sinasc) and the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (Sisvan).

What were the main results of the study?

The research group observed that children of both sexes showed an average increase of 1 cm in height.

Regarding obesity, an increase of more than 2% in prevalence was recorded in boys and girls. These numbers reflect significant changes and are a warning sign for public health.

What does the increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity mean?

Carolina Vieira, lead researcher of the study, highlights that the increase in the prevalence of obesity is an indication of changes in dietary patterns, with a greater consumption of ultra-processed foods and a more sedentary lifestyle.

She warns that Brazil needs to intensify efforts to reach the World Health Organization (WHO) target, which aims to curb the increase in obesity by 2030.

Are there benefits to being taller?

According to the results of the study, the increase in height is seen as a positive indicator, associated with better quality of health and greater longevity.

Research suggests that this phenomenon is linked to economic development and improvements in living conditions.

Long-term impact of obesity on children

Obesity in childhood is especially alarming because it can lead to chronic health conditions in adulthood, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Measures and recommendations

Experts recommend that interventions be implemented as soon as possible to curb this trend.

These include more robust public policies, nutritional education in schools and greater encouragement to practice physical exercise from an early age.

How can we prevent childhood obesity?

  • Limit consumption of ultra-processed foods
  • Encourage regular physical activity
  • Promote nutritional education in schools
  • Implement effective public health policies
  • Provide access to healthy, affordable foods
