The impacts of climate change on the planet are visible. But, in addition to rising temperatures, natural phenomena and the scarcity of resources, the damage directly affects human beings, especially their health. An example of this is the greater risk of developing diseases such as stroke.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Victor Hugo Espíndola reminds us that the standard risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of physical exercise, excessive alcohol consumption and family history of the disease. Added to this list is climate change, which can increase the risk of developing the condition in several ways.

“Air pollution associated with climate change can lead to cardiovascular conditions, including stroke. Additionally, extreme weather events, such as heat waves, can trigger increases in blood pressure and dehydration. This naturally increases the risk of developing the disease,” points out the expert.

It is worth highlighting that it is not just heat that increases this risk. After all, in colder periods, we also see an increase in the number of strokes. This occurs due to less water consumption, greater consumption of alcoholic beverages and an increase in neurotransmitters that lead to contraction of the arteries and an increase in blood pressure, warns the doctor.

How to reverse this phenomenon

According to the neurosurgeon, to reverse the impact of climate change on health and reduce the risk of stroke, it is necessary to adopt measures such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, investments in clean energy must be increased and adaptation policies to deal with extreme climate events are essential.

“In addition, it is crucial to promote healthy lifestyles. That is, a balanced diet, regular exercise and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption”, highlights Victor Hugo.

“It is important to highlight that awareness of the risks of strokes related to climate change must be increased, both among health professionals and the general public. This may include public education programs and specific health policies to mitigate the effects of climate change on cardiovascular health”, concludes the doctor.
