After the death of a 50-year-old person due to yellow fever in the interior of the state of São Paulo, the Ministry of Health issued a warning about the risk of this disease, with high lethality, last Sunday afternoon (28).
The Ministry of Health’s alert aims to intensify surveillance actions for yellow fever, an infection transmitted by mosquitoes, and expand vaccination, which is free in the Unified Health System (SUS).
“Yellow fever is a disease with a high fatality rate”, highlights the Ministry of Health, in a note. In the last six months, four cases were registered in Brazil, one in Roraima, one in Amazonas and two in the state of São Paulo. Of this total, three died as a result of the arbovirus.
It is worth noting that yellow fever is an endemic disease in the Amazon region, but from time to time it emerges in other states. In forest areas, the main vectors are mosquitoes of the genera Haemagogus It is Sabethes. In cities, where transmission is rarer, it occurs from the Aedes aegypti It’s from Aedes Albopictus.
Case of yellow fever in SP
The São Paulo state government confirmed the death of a 50-year-old man who lived in the city of Águas de Lindoia. He constantly moved to the Monte Sião region, in Minas Gerais, where he may have been bitten by mosquitoes and contracted yellow fever. The death occurred on March 29, but was under investigation until last week.
Differently, the other case of yellow fever in the state of São Paulo involved a man, aged 28, who lives in the municipality of Serra Grande. He recovered from the infection.

How to prevent yellow fever?
“Yellow fever is a disease that is easily preventable with the vaccine. And it is available in the SUS for all ages”, says Ethel Maciel, Secretary of Health and Environment Surveillance at the Ministry of Health.
“The false anti-vaccine campaigns have not only harmed the [vacinação contra a] covid. Yellow fever vaccination coverage is below what is recommended”, adds Secretary Maciel.

Regarding the risk of yellow fever in São Paulo, Health made an additional 150,000 doses of the yellow fever vaccine available. Furthermore, the guidance is that vaccination be applied without restrictions in Basic Health Units (UBS), that is, without the need for prior scheduling.
