This Friday, April 26th, the National Day for the Prevention and Combat of Arterial Hypertension is celebrated, a date created to raise awareness among the population about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this disease that affects more than 38 million people in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the Vigitel report, carried out in 2022, Minas Gerais occupies 2nd place in the ranking of states with the highest rates of high blood pressure, with 27.7%. Minas is second only to Rio de Janeiro, which has an incidence of 28.1%.

Hypertension is a chronic disease that occurs when blood pressure levels reach values equal to or greater than 140/90 mmHg – better known as 14 over 9. According to the cardiologist at Hapvida NotreDame Intermédica, Josely Figueiredo, high blood pressure requires effort largest part of the heart to distribute blood throughout the body.

“It is a disease with a multifactorial and metabolic cause that directly affects the cardiovascular system, leading to stiffening of blood vessels, inflammatory processes and damage to organs such as the heart, kidneys and brain. As a consequence, it hinders blood flow, compromising the transport of nutrients and oxygen to the cells”, explains the specialist.

Josely Figueiredo points to genetics as the main cause of the development of the disorder, but also highlights other factors that influence blood pressure levels. “High weight, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, diet high in salt, indiscriminate use of anti-inflammatories and corticosteroids, and improper consumption of hormones for aesthetic purposes can lead to high blood pressure.”

In most cases, the disease is silent, with no acute symptoms. However, if it is not treated properly, it can cause critical consequences for the body, as the cardiologist highlights. ”It is a serious risk factor for acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease and kidney and heart failure. During pregnancy, it can lead to premature birth and poor fetal development.”

Although there is no cure, the disease can be controlled effectively, providing quality of life for the patient. “Regular visits to the doctor for the correct diagnosis and early treatment with changes in lifestyle habits are the main measures to control high blood pressure and, consequently, promote a longer and healthier life”, advises the professional.
