The term Menopause can bring about many doubts and complications. For this reason, experts in different areas came together and “amenopausa.pt” was created. This platform was created to respond to all women going through Menopause and also to inform and give suggestions about some of the areas that this phase of a woman’s life can impact. The first in the country entirely dedicated to this topic, the result of a partnership between the Portuguese Society of Gynecology and Gedeon Richter Portugal, with the support of the Order of Pharmacists and the National Association of Pharmacies.

“The mission of this platform is to raise awareness and inform women about the impact and symptoms that Menopause causes throughout this stage of life. It is also a matter of female empowerment by contributing to increasing women’s literacy. Information on how to act, what kind of help and support they can seek, to face this phase of life in a more optimistic and healthy way, are some of the objectives of this platform”, explains Maria Geraldina Castro, gynecologist and medical director at Gedeon Richter Portugal.

Menopause represents a multifactorial phase in a woman’s life. It occurs when the ovaries are no longer capable of developing follicles and the most notable consequence is the definitive loss of reproductive capacity. Consequently, the woman stops menstruating. Its diagnosis is clinical and is made after one year of absence of menstruation (amenorrhea) in women, between 45 and 55 years of age, as long as there is no other pathological cause for this phenomenon.

Despite being a normal physiological process in a woman’s life, it can have consequences that have a strong impact on quality of life: hot flashes, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, mood changes, difficulties concentrating and osteoarticular pain, for example. The expression of these symptoms and disorders varies from woman to woman.

At a later stage, the consequences may result in osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and brain diseases. These disorders are not only due to the lack of estrogen, which characterizes menopause, but are also associated with eating and behavioral habits and aging.

Sleep, migraines, hormones and cardiovascular health are some of the areas that menopause can affect. On this platform you will find explanations for these and other questions.
