See how to correctly treat melasma

Melasma is a dermatological condition that causes dark spots on the skin, whether on the face or other areas exposed to the sun, such as the neck and arms. In addition to the aesthetic discomfort, this type of problem can also be a challenge for both dermatologists and patients.

This is because, according to dermatologist Dr. Renata Castilho, melasma is influenced by multiple factors. “Exposure to the sun is one of the main triggers, increasing melanin production. Female hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, are also frequently involved, which explains the higher prevalence in women, especially during pregnancy or use of hormonal contraceptives”, he states.

Furthermore, factors such as genetic predisposition and exposure to artificial light contribute to the development of melasma. The doctor also highlights that aesthetic procedures, such as peelings and lasers, performed improperly, can worsen the spots due to a rebound effect.

Singularity of each case

Recently, Isabella Fiorentino, model and presenter, brought to light a less conventional approach to treating her melasma. In statements that resonated on social media, she revealed that she chose not to use conventional treatments or sunscreen, also mentioning stopping laser treatments and other procedures considered abrasive, adopting unprotected sun exposure as part of her care regimen.

Despite his personal observations, this approach contradicts standard medical guidance, which emphasizes the importance of regular use of sunscreen to protect the skin and prevent melasma from worsening. “It is essential to understand that each case of melasma is unique and must be managed in a personalized way. Ms. Fiorentino’s experience is valid, but it is an exception and should not be seen as a general solution. Sunscreen continues to be an essential component in the prevention and management of melasma, with other individualized treatments”, warns Dr. Renata Castilho.

Melasma treatment

For the effective treatment of melasma, the dermatologist emphasizes the importance of a multifaceted approach. This includes the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen, products containing active ingredients that lighten the skin, and, when appropriate, carefully supervised dermatological procedures. Additionally, hormonal adjustments and lifestyle changes may also be necessary.

In conclusion, as the discussion around melasma continues to evolve, the importance of a personalized, evidence-based treatment strategy cannot be underestimated. Patients are encouraged to consult dermatologists qualified to develop a treatment plan that considers your specific needs and skin health conditions.
