The Brazilian Society of Dermatology highlights the necessary care when carrying out treatments on areas of the skin that present spots or pigmented signs in order to guarantee safety and minimize the risk of damage to the patient’s health.

Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer in Brazil and the differential diagnosis with benign skin signs can be difficult. Before any procedure, it is essential to analyze all the moles present in the area to be treated. Moles can vary in size, color and shape, and some may indicate underlying medical conditions.

It is recommended that a dermatologist evaluate all moles before starting these treatments. Moles that present atypical characteristics, such as variations in color, size, shape or symptoms such as itching, pain or bleeding, should be evaluated for the risk of malignancy.

All non-medical professionals should avoid handling or applying treatments directly to moles, unless specifically indicated by an attending physician. Protective devices, such as skin pads or sterile gauze, may be needed to cover moles during treatment, protecting them from physical or chemical damage.

Moles should be monitored for any changes, such as bleeding, increase in size or changes in color. If these changes are noticed, a reevaluation with a dermatologist is recommended. Clear recommendations to the patient, including protection of the moles and constant observation of changes in the location, must be reinforced by all healthcare professionals.
