Vaccination coverage against HPV (Human Papillomavirus) in children and adolescents of both sexes, between 9 and 15 years old, recorded a small increase in the number of immunized people, between 2022 and 2023 in Bahia. According to data from the Ministry of Health, released by the platform Stay in the knowthe total number of people who received immunization in the year before last was 1124.90, while last year it was 1198.43.

The numbers correspond to the first and second dose vaccination schedule (D1 and D2), which was the previous system used across the country, before the change to a single dose in 2024. The data corresponds to both boys and girls. Initially, the Ministry of Health obtained higher numbers in Brazil for the first dose than for the second dose. In Bahia, the numbers varied last year.

14-year-old girls in the state were those who most achieved the female vaccination rate in the first dose, with 79.52%. The 9-year-old age group had the lowest, with 52.47%.

In the second dose, the ages registered rates of 21.39% and 65.83% respectively. Among boys, 52.55% of 14-year-olds were those who received the most vaccinations. 9-year-old boys were the least vaccinated, with 33.12%, in D1. In the second dose, 15-year-olds were the most vaccinated with 40.52% and 9-year-olds with 5.32%.

2022 NUMBERS

In 2022, 14-year-old girls were the most vaccinated in Bahia with D1, representing a total of 80.97%, followed by the 13-year-old age group with 78.77%. Those who were least vaccinated were 9 years old, with 47.24%.

In the second dose, the respective tracks continued to be the most highlighted. Girls aged 14 with 66.63% were the most vaccinated and 9 years old were the least vaccinated with 18.08%. 9-year-old boys recorded lower rates than young girls during the year before last. Only 7.87% of boys were vaccinated with D1 during this period and 0.21% of children of this age with D2.

The highest rates of boys vaccinated in D1 were those aged 14 (56.68%) and in dose 2 those aged 15 with 39.92%. The Bahia Notícias report sought out experts from the State Department of Health (Sesab) to discuss and analyze the numbers, but was unable to contact them until the article was written. There was no information in the survey about vaccination coverage in cities in Bahia.
