To guarantee the health of the prison population and prison staff, the Department of Justice (Sejus) began the vaccination campaign against Influenza flu in the State’s prison units. Immunization follows the vaccination schedule established by the municipalities and takes place during this month.
The action is coordinated by the Penal System Health Management (GSSP). Since the prison system is part of the priority group for vaccination, the campaign will cover 100% of those in custody and all employees of prison units. Currently, more than 23 thousand people are deprived of their liberty in the State.
The vaccine is offered to the prison population every year, before winter, a period in which respiratory diseases are more common, following the national calendar of the Ministry of Health (MS).
The Prison Health Manager, Janaina Arenas Cavadas de Sousa Mendes, explains that the objective is to prevent infection caused by the Influenza virus and contribute to the health of everyone involved in the prison community.
“The prison population entered the priority group for vaccination in 2012, as it is a public that spends most of the time in closed and crowded places, which facilitates the transmission of the Influenza virus. In this way, immunization against the flu prevents illness from the virus and its complications. Prophylactic measures are adopted in order to prevent the spread of the disease in penal establishments and, therefore, guarantee a healthy environment for inmates and also for employees who work in the units”, explains Janaina Mendes.
