Etecs and Fatecs continue with actions to combat the dengue epidemic

RepeLeste, a repellent created in Fatec Zona Leste and distributed to the community, is one of the actions to combat mosquitoes

The state Technical Schools (Etecs) and Colleges of Technology (Fatecs) in the Paula Souza Center (CPS) continue to be alert to the dengue epidemic that is affecting the state and the country. Even with the end of summer, actions to combat mosquito breeding sites Aedes Aegypti and community awareness mobilize nine units.

Etec Parque Belém and Fatec East Zone

At Etec Parque Belém, in the east of the capital, liquid repellent dispensers are being installed for use by students, teachers and staff. The unit’s management teamed up with the Student Union to reinforce cleaning actions and combat the proliferation of the dengue mosquito.

Located in the same region, Fatec Zona Leste produced 800 bottles of repellent in the chemistry laboratory for donation to the academic community. baptized by RepeLeste, The product is made from alcohol gel, plus an active ingredient extracted from citronella leaves and two types of pepper, which provided the formula with icaridin, an efficient substance in protecting against mosquitoes. Aedes Aegypti.

The idea arose during the higher technology course in Polymers and gained the collaboration of several departments within the unit. “Logistics and Human Resources students created the art, which was perfected by the Academic Secretariat. The professor of the Polymers course, Maria Aparecida Colombo, was technically responsible for the formulation. And the entire community mobilized to raise the necessary resources to produce the repellent”, says the director of Fatec Zona Leste, João Roberto Maiellaro.

Etec Sister Agostina

At Etec Irmã Agostina, located in the south of the capital, teachers and students take advantage of the Paulo Freire Week celebrations to expand awareness and combat actions against dengue. With the 2024 Olympics as the central theme, biology professor Jaquellini Ribeiro Dias proposed a comparison between the mosquito Aedes Albopictus originating in France, and the Aedes Aegypti, born in Brazil. “The French mosquito is known as tiger and was responsible for the first case of autochthonous dengue in Ile de Francein August 2023”, explains the teacher.

Also responsible for the microbiology component of the technical Chemistry course, the teacher gathered the morning class to prepare a homemade repellent, with a formulation published by the Fire Department. “We are going to develop the product based on alcohol, cloves and body oil, which must be left in a bottle for four days. We will create a logo and label, containing the date of manufacture, batch number and validity of one year, all as part of the curricular work”, she explains.

The repellent will be available in spray bottles in various areas of the school.

Etec de Cubatão

At Etec in Cubatão, lectures provided information about the dengue epidemic, exploring statistical data and technical information about the disease and the mosquito that transmits it. Around 430 students from technical courses in Administration, Logistics, Environment and Human Resources integrated into High School participated in the sessions.

Led by professor André Vicente, the actions were in partnership with the Internal Accident Prevention Commission (Cipa), the Department of Health and Zoonoses of the Municipality of Cubatão and a logistics company. “The students participated in actions to combat Aedes Aegypti including a cleaning effort in Vila Esperança, here in Cubatão, when they visited houses, identifying possible breeding sites and providing guidance to residents”, said the director of Etec Cubatão, Kelly Renata Mariano da Silva.

Fatec Taquaritinga

At the Fatec Taquaritinga experimental campus, the new thing is the project to grow citronella as a repellent to combat the dengue mosquito, as part of the plant production and agro-industrial production disciplines of the higher education technology course in Agribusiness.

Coordinated by professors Vanessa Amaro and Alessandra Furlanetti, in partnership with professor Mariana Frigieri, from Fatec de Jaboticabal, the work aims to use Cymbopogon Winterianu for the production of natural extract to combat mosquitoes Aedes Aegypti.

“Growing citronella already helps create a natural barrier against dengue, as the plant releases an odor that scares away insects. But the effectiveness is greater when the oil used as a solution or candles is extracted”, explains professor Vanessa Amaro Vieira.

Etec de Garça

At Etec Deputado Paulo Ornellas Carvalho de Barros, in Garça, students from the technical Chemistry course developed a natural repellent based on six different essential oils, extracted from plants collected in the school unit itself. Under the guidance of professor Nivaldo Pereira de Macedo, the repellent will be presented as a course completion work (TCC) by students Cláudia Cristina Ribeiro, Cláudia Roberta Vasconcelos de Carvalho, Jéssica Dias Santos Nunes de Souza, Guilherme Roberto Moia dos Santos and Vinícius Tavares Mota from Integrated High School to Chemistry Technician.

The oils are extracted from citrus plants, including citronella, already used as a natural repellent. Water and alcohol complete the formulation, which leads to an approximate cost of R$3 to produce 80 milliliters of the product, which lasts around four hours. “Now we are looking for companies interested in producing the repellent on a large scale, so that the product can be sold at an affordable price”, says the professor.

Etec Rubens de Faria e Souza

At Etec Rubens de Faria e Souza, in Sorocaba, awareness actions go beyond the walls of the unit. Students on the Nursing Technician course make informative posters and pamphlets and also take information to the Basic Health Units (UBS) where they work or intern.

Students from other courses at the unit also promote awareness-raising competitions in the municipality, with performances of plays and musicals, in addition to collecting food for donation.

Piracicaba, São José do Rio Preto and Marília

At Etec Coronel Fernando Febeliano da Costa, in Piracicaba, students on the technical Nursing course carried out activities with children at the municipal daycare center. In a playful way, they explained the means of preventing the disease, such as Public Health action.

Students on the Nursing technical course at Etec Philadelpho Gouvêa Netto, in São José do Rio Preto, opted for a theatrical play to convey the message to students at the Municipal School of Early Childhood Education in the Eldorado neighborhood.

Etec Antônio Devisate in Marília took dengue fever up for discussion in the Nursing course integrative project. The theme will be developed in four modules:

1st) Protection and prevention, nursing in medical and surgical clinics, public health I;
2nd) Public Health II and supervised internships;
3rd) Nursing care in ICU and specialized units I;
4th) Epidemiological Surveillance.
