See food that reduces the risk of developing cancer

Did you know that a simple vegetable on your plate has the power to significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer?

We are talking about carrot, a food rich in nutrients and with incredible health properties. Therefore, integrate this superfood to your diet can bring immeasurable benefits.

What reduces the risk of cancer?

A study conducted by the University of Newcastle, in England, revealed that carrot not only enriches our diet but also fortifies our body against serious diseases, such as cancer.

According to research published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, Eating five servings of this vegetable a week can reduce your risk of cancer by up to 20%.

On the other hand, consuming just one serving per week was enough to reduce the chances of developing cancer by 4%, compared to people who never eat carrots.

To arrive at these results, the team reviewed almost 200 studies that included 4.7 million participants.

What components of carrots help in the fight against cancer?

Previous scientific studies have focused on the health benefits of beta-carotene, the compound that gives carrots their orange color. However, according to the team at Newcastle University, it is the whole carrot, and not just the carotenes, that has anti-cancer properties if consumed regularly.

According to Charles Ojobor, lead author of the study, beta-carotene “has not shown many beneficial effects on cancer in controlled experiments”.

“As a result, we studied carrots because of their content of a different type of phytochemical, polyacetylenes, which are colorless but have strong effects on cancer,” he explained.

In other words, according to the author of the study, polyacetylenes, bioactive components present in carrots, would be natural protectors of cells, preventing the development of cancer.
