UA new recommendation from the Preventive Services Task Force pointed out, this week, that the first mammogram with a view to preventing breast cancer should be done at the age of 40, ten years earlier than previously established.
This Thursday, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) published an alert on social media regarding this cancer.
“In Portugal, 5 women die a day from Breast Cancer”start by writing those responsible in a publication shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
At the publication table, the DGS reminds the public of the current recommendations here, pointing out that “prevention is fundamental”.
On its page, the DGS maintains the recommendations it had until then. “In the case of breast cancer, the consensus includes having a mammogram every two years, from 50 to 69 years of age”, it reads.
On the same page, the health authority also talks about screenings for other cancers, such as colorectal or cervical cancer. In the first case, screening “includes fecal occult blood testing from 50 to 74 years of age.” In the second, “the screening includes the cervical cytology test (Pap smear) in women between 20 and 30 years of age and up to 60 years of age”.
“These screenings have demonstrated a reduction in mortality of approximately 30% in breast cancer, 20% in colorectal cancer and 80% in cervical cancer”, warns the DGS.
