Viruses, considered highly contagious, can be prevented with flu vaccines. Currently, the remaining doses of the vaccine will be released for application to the entire population over 6 months in Santa Catarina.

Hospitalizations due to highly contagious virus

Santa Catarina declared a public health emergency following the growing number of cases of respiratory diseases in the state. The measure was made official in the Official Gazette of Santa Catarina last Monday (29).

This Saturday (4), the occupancy of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds in Santa Catarina has already reached the mark of 94.40%.

The most critical regions are Foz do Rio Itajaí, which does not have any beds available, and Grande Florianópolis, with only seven beds available.

Despite the number, according to SES/SC (Santa Catarina State Health Department), patients who are in regions that may not have available beds can be transported to other regions.

Fiocruz bulletin shows concern

According to the latest bulletin from Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz), the greater circulation of RSV has generated a significant increase in the incidence and mortality of SARS in children up to 2 years of age in Brazil.

Other respiratory viruses that remain at a high incidence in the child population are Sars-CoV-2 (covid-19) and rhinovirus. Among the elderly, the number of deaths from SARS remains higher, with Covid-19 predominating.

In the analysis by federative units, 22 states record an increase in SARS cases in the long-term trend, including Santa Catarina. Are they:

Alagoas, Amazonas, Amapá, Ceará, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, São Paulo and Tocantins.

In relation to SARS cases due to Covid-19, the indication is a drop in the states of the Central-West, Southeast and South. In the other regions, the trend is for stability at relatively low levels.
