This Wednesday (8), the Santos Health Department will hold the 16th Joint Action to Combat Aedes aegypti of 2024 in the Castelo neighborhood, starting at 9 am. 63 agents to combat endemic diseases were appointed, who will be properly uniformed with a green vest and badge, and will meet at the Centro Esportivo Zona Noroeste Dale Coutinho (Rua Fausto Felício Bruzarosco, s/nº – Castelo).

The company Terracom will work in partnership with the Department of Health, providing a team of 25 agents and a truck to remove unusable materials, which have the potential to create breeding grounds for the mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya, zika and urban yellow fever.

BALANCE

The joint efforts carried out in 2024 in Santos have already eliminated 1,162 outbreaks with larvae. This year, 1,809 cases of dengue and 41 of chikungunya were confirmed in the Municipality.

THE MOSQUITO

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. These eggs need water and heat to hatch. Thus, larvae appear, which later transform into pupa and, finally, into mosquitoes.

Only females feed on human blood, which is necessary for the maturation of their eggs before they are laid. However, if this female has bitten a person infected with dengue or chikungunya, she becomes a virus transmitter by sucking the blood of other individuals.

TOP TIPS

Check for standing water in plant pots and dishes
Sinks – check for leaks and keep drains sealed
Drains in the floor – cover them with a screen, if they are not the open and close type. Apply bleach twice a week
Refrigerator outer tray – check for water accumulation, clean and keep dry
Toilet bowl and flush boxes – keep covered
Gutters and slabs – if it is not possible to check whether they accumulate water, look for signs of moisture. If so, resolve the issue
Water tanks – check the condition of the lids. Request replacement of missing or broken ones
Ornamental fountains, pet drinking fountains, swimming pools – check for the presence of living organisms in the water. Clean regularly

SANTOS’ STRATEGIES FOR FIGHTING AEDES AEGYPTI – WHOLE YEAR

Casa a Casa – routine visitation program to properties
Mutirão – sweep carried out weekly in some neighborhood of the City
Special properties and strategic points – places visited monthly
Special properties: large circulation of people – schools, hotels, shopping centers
Strategic points: more risk of breeding sites – tire shops, workshops, scrap metals, cemeteries, construction sites
Nebulization – application of insecticide around the home of an infected person to combat the mosquito in its adult stage, when it is transmitting diseases
Traps – Santos has 481 traps distributed throughout the city, monitored weekly, which show the mosquito infestation rate in the area
Epidemiological monitoring – notification and investigation of all cases of diseases transmitted by Aedes by Epidemiological Surveillance
Educational Activities – educational activities on the streets, schools, lectures at companies and institutions, toll booths at different points in the City, participation in events, themed stands and meetings in condominiums
