Epidemiological data on dengue released last Friday (3) by the State Department of Health (SES) shows that the total number of deaths from the disease rose from 15 to 18 deaths.

The last three deaths are from the municipalities of Laguna Carapã and Ponta Porã. There are two male people and one female. The victims were between 55 and 85 years old and all had comorbidities.

Although the total number of confirmed cases showed a drop compared to 2023, which recorded 41,046 cases, the mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants more than doubled, going from 0.65 in 2023 to 0.85 in 2024. This increase in lethality from 0.10% to 0.24% in the same period suggests an alarming situation.

A detailed analysis of the municipalities shows that, while Itaquiraí leads with the highest incidence of probable cases (437.4 per 100 thousand inhabitants), other municipalities also report considerable numbers, with Nova Andradina and Japorã following with average incidence rates. The historical graph of deaths reveals that, after a reduction in cases between 2022 and 2023, the number of deaths in 2024 is comparable to previous peaks observed in 2023 and 2021.
