Previously the target of comments and even criticism, hair transplantation is no longer a procedure carried out “in secret” but is gaining more and more popularity. No wonder it has become one of the most searched terms on Google.

The data comes from the search tool itself, through Trends – which indicates which topics are most searched for on the platform. According to reports, since 2004, hair transplantation has been the most searched term in terms of “transplants”, with 48% of searches on the site. To give you an idea, the marrow comes in second place, followed by the heart, kidneys, corneas and liver.

For trichologist and dermatologist specialized in hair transplants Dr. Marcelo Nogueira, this information reflects the importance that people attribute to aesthetics and self-confidence in the country. “Hair plays a significant role in appearance and self-esteem and hair transplantation offers an effective and permanent solution for those who wish to restore their hair density and improve their self-image.”

According to the Brazilian Hair Restoration Association (ABCRC), there are different profiles of people seeking hair transplantation. Data indicates that around 80% of patients face genetic hair loss. One of the causes that most often bring patients to clinics looking for a hair transplant is, for example, the so-called androgenetic alopecia, better known as baldness.

The ABCRC also reveals that 10% of patients suffer from hair loss resulting from the use of medications, due to hormonal, nutritional or even dermatological problems. Finally, 5% seek reconstruction and another 5% seek post-cosmetic surgery.

The different types of hair transplant

Dr. Marcelo Nogueira explains that “hair transplantation is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, in which healthy hair follicles are transplanted from donor areas to recipient areas on the scalp.” According to him, such follicles are generally removed from the back and sides of the head, “where the hair is genetically resistant to hair loss, and are implanted in areas where hair loss is most evident”, he highlights.

There are, however, different types of this procedure. One of them is high-density hair transplantation, a more advanced technique that aims to create a denser, more natural appearance. This is because the surgeon can also better control the direction and angle of the follicles, which leads to more satisfactory results.

According to the trichologist, in conventional transplantation, the follicles are implanted at greater spacing. High density, however, involves the implantation of a much greater number of hair follicles per square centimeter. “This results in denser coverage and a fuller appearance, especially in cases of advanced hair loss or when looking for a very defined and thick hairline”, explains the dermatologist.

Some precautions guarantee the success of the transplant

As with other aesthetic or health procedures, it is necessary to carefully select the professional who will be responsible for the transplant. According to ABCRC, around 12% of the Association’s affiliates served patients seeking correction of previously performed surgeries. Many of them have performed their procedures in clandestine clinics or unqualified professionals.

Of these, the Association reported that 15% needed to completely redo the hair transplant. “It is important to choose a surgeon specialized and experienced in hair transplantation, in order to guarantee safe and satisfactory results”, emphasizes Dr. Marcelo Nogueira.

The trichologist also draws attention to the post-operative period. “It is crucial that patients understand the post-operative care needed to optimize results and minimize the risk of complications.”
