Respiratory allergies are immune system reactions to inhaled substances that trigger an inflammatory response in the airways. These allergens can include dust, dust mites, pollen, mold, pet dander, and chemicals in the air. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include sneezing, runny nose, itchy and/or nasal congestion, coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and eye irritation.
Below, check out some tips from Dr. Clóvis Eduardo Santos Galvão, allergist and immunologist and coordinator of the Allergen Commission of the Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology (ASBAI), to avoid respiratory allergies!
1. Keep the house dust-free
Dust mites and other particles present in dust can cause respiratory allergies. Therefore, regularly cleaning, vacuuming carpets, curtains and furniture can help reduce these allergens. “Give preference to cold floors, which allow better dust removal when cleaning the house”, recommends Dr. Clóvis Eduardo Santos Galvão.
2. Be careful with items that accumulate dust
In addition to cleaning the house, it is important attention with items that can collect dust. “Avoid using too many decorative items, as they facilitate the accumulation of dust, such as cushions, heavy curtains and even stuffed animals”, he recommends.
3. Keep pets away from the bedroom
Pet dander is a common source of allergens. Therefore, Dr. Clóvis Eduardo Santos Galvão recommends preventing pets from entering the room, especially if you have allergies.
4. Regularly ventilate your home
According to Dr. Clóvis Eduardo Santos Galvão, keep the windows open and allow air circulation fresh can help reduce the concentration of allergens in the indoor environment.
5. Avoid using irritating cleaning products and fragrances
Cleaning products with strong odors and fragrances can trigger allergic reactions in some people. “When cleaning your home, use products with neutral odors so as not to harm the patient’s respiratory mucosa”, recommends the allergist.
6. Consult a doctor
If you suspect you have respiratory allergies, see a doctor or an allergist. They can perform tests to identify specific triggers and provide personalized guidance to prevent and manage symptoms.
