The Department of Health (SES) warns of the risks of mouth cancer, which caused the deaths of 224 people in the state in 2023. The concern is highlighted this month, with the Maio Vermelho prevention campaign, as it is the fifth type cancer with the highest incidence among the population – 4.6% of registered cases and a death rate of 3%.

With the aim of raising awareness about the disease, the Superintendence of Comprehensive Health Care Policies (Spais) will distribute digital information materials, such as cards and electronic banners, to municipalities, through its 18 regions. A ‘live’ event is also planned to promote discussions on the topic among professionals.

The guideline is for people to make periodic visits to the dentist, which favors the identification of suspicious lesions and early diagnosis. The service is offered by the Unified Health System (SUS).

The importance of early diagnosis and treatment

“Eighty percent of cases of this type of cancer are curable, if diagnosed early and treated appropriately”, says the coordinator of Specialized Oral Health at SES, Maria de Fátima Nunes de Oliveira.

“Treatment usually involves oncological surgery and/or radiotherapy. The assessment is made on a case-by-case basis”, adds the coordinator.

Risk factors

Among the main causes of mouth cancer and some oropharyngeal tumors are:

  • smoking
  • and excessive alcohol consumption, according to the National Cancer Institute (Inca).
  • Obesity
  • and low consumption of fruits and vegetables are also associated with increased risk, according to a study by the American Institute For Cancer Research.

Another important risk factor for lip cancer is prolonged unprotected sun exposure. Furthermore, some cases of oropharyngeal tumors are related to HPV infection..

“This information will be displayed in graphic materials, showing that the main causes of these diseases are habits that can be avoided or modified”, says the state’s Oncology coordinator, Kleber Junior Rodrigues Monteiro.

Symptoms

Among the main symptoms of these types of cancer, the following can be observed:

  • lesions in the oral cavity or lips that do not heal for more than 15 days;
  • red or whitish spots/plaques on the tongue, gums, palate (roof of the mouth) and cheek;
  • nodules (lumps) in the neck
  • and persistent hoarseness.

In more advanced cases, the following may also occur:

  • difficulty chewing and swallowing,
  • difficulty speaking,
  • feeling that there is something stuck in the throat.
