Cancer does not have a single cause. Studies indicate that genetic and behavioral factors directly influence the development of the disease. Therefore, the maxim ‘prevention is better than cure’ must be an internalized mantra and put into practice when it comes to neoplasms.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world and was responsible for 9.6 million deaths in 2018. The survey also showed that 40% of cases could be prevented by avoiding behaviors risks, such as alcohol consumption, unbalanced diet, smoking and sedentary lifestyle.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle may seem simple for some, but it is challenging for others. However, it is the basic rule for achieving longevity. “Distance from this route increases the chance of being affected by a tumor on the road of life”, explains the doctor at the Social Service of Industry (Sesi), Ediney Espínola, who warns about the increase in rates of the disease.

“We cannot change genetic factors, but we can change our habits to free ourselves from this reality. We need to understand the seriousness of the situation and realize that, year after year, the number of cases is increasing; and the lifestyle we lead has been decisive for this growth.”

The progression of the disease is evident in cancer records in Mato Grosso. According to data from the State Department of Health (SES-MT), there was a significant increase in cases: from 5,052 in 2021 to 7,205 in 2022. Among the most common neoplasms, breast cancer affected 581 women in 2021 and 683 in 2022, while prostate cancer affected 415 men in 2021 and 489 in 2022.

For Espínola, the numbers reinforce the urgency of converting people to a path built on practices that promote quality of life, a path considered safe and assertive to face the current scenario.

“The population cannot indulge in pleasure and be reckless with their own health. The future depends on us and must be shaped in the present, based on the conscious choices we make that will have a direct impact on our well-being.”

Shoo sedentary lifestyle! – For a more quality future, the guideline is to include the practice of physical activities in your routine. “Three times a week is enough”, guarantees the professional, who also lists walking, running, weight training, dance classes or swimming as alternatives.

“The exercise of your choice. The important thing is to get out of a sedentary lifestyle to avoid chronic diseases.” Diet plays a crucial role in cancer risk. According to Sesi MT nutritionist, Rafaela Martins, combining physical activity with a balanced diet is the key to effective prevention.

She recommends opting for natural and nutritious foods, reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods and including colorful meals with grilled meats and steamed vegetables. Additionally, he suggests fruit as an accompaniment to snacks, such as bread with eggs for breakfast.

Combining healthy habits with preventive exams to detect cancer early is crucial, as it considerably increases the chances of successful treatment, reaching up to 90% cure. Furthermore, it is recommended to include medical monitoring as an integral part of this new lifestyle.
