AD Lupus | Meeting to raise awareness about the disease that affects around 5 million people

-

May 10th marks World Lupus Day, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects around five million people worldwide, being more common in women of childbearing age. In Portugal, it is estimated that around 10,000 Portuguese people are affected by this pathology. Within the scope of this anniversary, the Association of Patients with Lupus (ADL) organizes, in June 1stone meeting with the theme ‘Living the Future with Lupus’. This event will feature the participation of experts who will address topics relevant to patients, such as childhood lupus, lupus nephritis and mental health.

“At ADL we recognize the importance of health literacy so that patients can take an active role in managing their disease. Furthermore, clinical monitoring by specialized health professionals is crucial to the success of the treatment.” explains Rita Mendes, president of ADL. “It is important to raise awareness of this pathology and promote patient empowerment. The meeting ‘Living the future with Lupus’ is an opportunity to share knowledge, in order to contribute to a better quality of life for patients”he adds.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) can affect any part of the body and is caused by an imbalance in the immune system, in which the cells responsible for defense produce antibodies against the body’s own cells. This condition can affect everything from joints and muscles to internal organs such as kidneys, lungs and heart.

Among the most serious manifestations of lupus is Lupus Nephritis (LN), which affects around 40% of patients with SLE. This complication can lead to kidney failure and other serious complications, being one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.

Despite advances in knowledge about the pathogenesis of lupus and improvements in existing therapies, LN continues to be a major challenge for patients and healthcare professionals. The quality of life of patients with LN is significantly reduced, with chronic fatigue and costs associated with the disease, both direct and indirect.

World Lupus Day serves as a reminder that there is still a lot to be done in the fight against this disease, taking into account that there is an unmet medical need for the treatment of patients with LN to preserve kidney function in the long term, reducing relapses. and the gradual reduction of corticosteroids. Through research, the development of new therapies, health education and patient support, it is essential to work together towards a future where lupus is no longer an obstacle to quality of life.
