Results of the Convention of Clean Ocean Organizations will be presented to the UN

Those who have worked to protect the ocean want to have a say in the policies that need to be adopted, at an international level, to reverse the damage that has already been done.

“Today we are experiencing a biodiversity crisis because management and conservation measures have not been implemented and this has led to a loss of value, resources and life”, guaranteed Emanuel Gonçalves, administrator of the “Fundação Oceano Azul”.

Not giving due importance to the ocean, which occupies more than 70% of the planet’s surface, is to ignore the potential it has to help combat one of today’s main challenges, the climate crisis.

“When we have the ocean protected, we have more marine life, we have more natural systems, more carbon absorbed, but also because it is a way in which in the multilateral context, in the context of major decisions, the ocean becomes a main actor” , added the administrator of the “Fundação Oceano Azul”.

At the Convention of Organizations for a Clean Ocean that took place this Saturday in Lisbon, organizations shared knowledge and sought solutions for a problem that belongs to everyone.

“Our task is to halt and reverse this decline, as if the future of our species depended on it. Because it does,” said Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy for the oceans.

Next year the result of this exchange of ideas between Portuguese organizations will be presented at the third Conference of the United Nations Oceans, which is seen as one of the last opportunities to outline a strategy to save the ocean.
