The Entroncamento Municipal Assembly approved on Thursday, February 29, the Municipal Plan for Climate Action. The document from the Entroncamento Chamber provides for the implementation of a set of 19 measures – mitigation and adaptation – with a view to combating climate change.

In Entroncamento, the fight against climate change at a local level will be carried out in two areas – mitigation and adaptation – through a document that foresees 19 measures.

Climate change is today an undeniable reality, which manifests itself in the environment, in ecosystems, in society in general and in the economy”, says the mayor of Entroncamento in the document in question.

For Jorge Faria, the question then arises “How to control climate change?”. Knowing that climate change is a global problem, the municipality emphasizes that “responses imply concerted actions at all levels, ending at the local level, with collective and individual measures”.

“In Entroncamento, Climate Action is a constant reality and one that we have always embraced: changing public lighting to LED, modernizing swimming pool air conditioning, replacing lighting in all public buildings, replacing the car fleet with electric vehicles, including the TURE, the management of garden irrigation, the renewal of water supply networks, the reduction of water waste for human consumption, are some of the measures already implemented and which we will continue to improve”, highlights the mayor.

In this way, the municipality of Entroncamento seeks to continue responding to “this challenge in favor of the quality of life of our residents in particular and the planet in general”.

According to the municipality, the Entroncamento PMAC is the “fundamental instrument” for planning adaptation and mitigation of climate change. “It outlines a vision, objectives and goals for combating climate change in the Municipality, for this purpose the climate vulnerabilities of the territory (current and future) are analyzed and outlining a set of measures to minimize/eliminate the identified vulnerabilities”.

Within the scope of PMAC Entroncamento, negative impacts and opportunities associated with climate change are also identified, as well as the costs of inaction and mechanisms for monitoring and monitoring, governance, public participation and the promotion of a fair and inclusive transition are defined.

The document now approved by the Municipal Assembly seeks to comply with the Climate Basic Law, which sets out in law the need to promote the fight against climate change at a local level, stipulating that all municipalities must develop their Municipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PMAC) until February 1, 2024.

In Entroncamento, the fight against climate change at a local level will be carried out in two areas – mitigation and adaptation – through a document that foresees 19 measures. “With a direct impact on the territory, this project foresees the development of the following objectives:

▪ Improve knowledge of the phenomenon of climate change at local level;

▪ Identify the actions necessary to adapt the Entroncamento territory to climate change;

▪ Identify the actions necessary to mitigate the impacts of climate change in the Entroncamento territory;

▪ Increase the response capacity and resilience of the Municipality of Entroncamento to the impacts of climate change;

▪ Create a culture of cooperation in combating climate change across various sectors and actors;

▪ Raise awareness among interested parties about combating climate change in the Municipality of Entroncamento”.
