Family was found by firefighters with symptoms of poisoning.

The cough caused by the carbon monoxide gas already spread throughout the house made the 6-year-old boy wake up from his sleep. And it was the luck of the whole family, as the child managed to wake up his pregnant mother and also save his 5-year-old brother who was sleeping soundly. It happened in the early hours of this Thursday, in Arcozelo, Barcelos. Mother and children were hospitalized in Braga. When help arrived, at 5:30 am, everyone was already showing symptoms of poisoning.

The incident was probably caused by poor smoke extraction from a stove installed in the living room of the house. The accumulation of carbon monoxide was already high in the house and the Barcelos firefighters had to ventilate the space while aid was provided to the victims.

The 34-year-old pregnant woman was woken up by the boy who, in addition to coughing, also had nausea and vomiting. Through 112, the mother asked for help and while she was making the call she began to lose consciousness. The help was quick and when the Barcelos firefighters and the VMER medical team from the local hospital arrived at the house, on Rua do Gião, everyone was already showing symptoms of nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. The medical team’s decision was to transport mother and children to Braga Hospital and doctors accompanied the victims to the health unit.
