Germany today began airdropping aid to northern Gaza, three days after Defense Minister Boris Pistorius authorized this measure to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave.

A Hercules C130 plane dropped four tons of food over Gaza from a height of around 1,000 meters, the German air force reported on the social network X.

The launches were carried out after the Hercules, which can carry up to 18 tons of cargo, took off from Jordan.

The first delivery of humanitarian aid by the German air force, through the airlift promoted by Jordan, took place just hours after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz left for that country to meet with Jordanian King Abdullah II.

The two leaders will discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip and the Middle East in general.

On Sunday, the German Chancellor will also travel to Israel, where he will hold meetings with the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the president of that country, Isaac Herzog.

Before Israeli leaders, Scholz will insist on the need to allow more humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip and prevent an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah, in the extreme south of the Palestinian enclave, where 1.4 million displaced people have taken refuge from the attacks.

The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the unprecedented October 7 attack by the Islamist group Hamas in southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 people, most of them civilians, according to official Israeli data.

The Israeli military operation launched in retaliation has so far left almost 31,500 people dead in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
