The rehabilitation work on the old Fontainhas railway station, Balasar, was inaugurated this Sunday morning (18). The objective is for the property to be transformed into a beverage establishment, equipped with a kitchen, bathrooms and support spaces.

“It is a work that makes us all proud”, said José Cancela, president of the Balasar Council, showing himself satisfied with the “mission accomplished”, in a “prime area of our parish”. “It will be the first of many that we want and are carrying out in our parish, and we will fight so that by the end of our mandate we can achieve all of them”, he said.

Aires Pereira, president of the Municipal Council of Póvoa de Varzim, pointed out that the rehabilitation works of the old railway stations must be “careful interventions”, given the “remarkable heritage from an architectural point of view”, creating “more comfortable and that can be adaptable to an exploration that adds value, but we must preserve the memory”.

“Civil society now has the floor, so that it can take charge and provide quality service to the population and everyone who visits us”, taking into account the cycle path, an equipment that runs right next to the old station (on the route that used to be made the train) and which dozens of people use daily.

At the end of last year, a competition had already been opened to transfer the right to occupy the property, but this did not yield any results. According to the President of the Chamber, “we are going to open a new competition, since in the previous competition they did not include the room that was supposed to be a support room. I think it makes perfect sense for the room to be part of the concession. I am convinced that with this increase in area, there will be people interested in exploring space,” he said.
