The Iberian wolf is an “endangered” species. This was the theme for the lecture on “The Iberian Wolf and the Management of its Habitat”, which took place at the Vila Verde Basic School, with the participation of Cindy Loureiro and Gonçalo Brotas, from the Iberian Wolf Habitat Conservation Association. It was another initiative within the scope of the 5th Vila Verde Science and Technology Fair.

In the session, Cindy Loureiro spoke about this endemic subspecies of the Iberian Peninsula, its characteristics, its diet, its habitat and some fundamental aspects for its conservation, mentioning “The wolf (Canis lupus, Linnaeus 1758) is a mammal from the family of canids.

A large carnivore, only surpassed in Europe by the brown bear, it is the largest wild canid today.

The Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus, Cabrera 1907) is the endemic subspecies of the Iberian Peninsula. In Portugal it has the conservation status of “Endangered” (EN) species and is considered a priority.”

The presentation also revealed some of the projects that ACHLI develops in favor of the conservation of its habitat. Regarding the projects, Technician Gonçalo Brota highlighted that «all projects take into account the current state of the packs in the areas where they are planned, as well as their socio-economic environment, an aspect that is often decisive for the success of their implementation. Currently, ACHLI has defined two intervention zones where the projects will be implemented: South of the Douro River and Alto Minho».

Teachers, students and the general public participated in this lecture and there was a very participatory and interesting debate about this “Endangered” species.

It should be noted that the Science & Technology Fair is an initiative of the House of Knowledge of Vila Verde with the Living Science Centers at the Vila Verde Secondary School, the School Groups of Moure and Ribeira do Neiva, Prado and Vila Verde , in collaboration with Escola Profissional Amar Terra Verde and several partners.
