Teachers say that 20,000 places are insufficient for schools’ needs – Society

The national federations of Education (FNE) and teachers (Fenprof) stated this Wednesday that the 20 thousand vacancies announced to secure teachers in schools are insufficient to meet needs.

On Tuesday, the ordinance was published in the Diário da República that determines the opening of 20,853 vacancies in school staff, so that teachers linked to pedagogical zone staff (QZP) can move closer to home and settle in a specific school .

The diploma also determines the opening of 7,077 vacancies for contracted teachers to join the Ministry of Education’s staff.

The two main structures representing teachers considered this Wednesday that the places available for this year’s internal and external competitions are insufficient and do not meet the needs of educational establishments.

“These numbers represent an advance when compared to previous years, the FNE considers that they are not enough to respond to the real needs of schools”, writes the federation in a statement.

Concerned about the persistent lack of teachers, FNE emphasizes that students are still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on learning, therefore requiring more professionals.

On the other hand, they also mention the increase in the number of foreign students, the reduction in the maximum number of students per class and the splitting of classes into practical and experimental classes.

Fenprof also highlighted the insufficiency of vacancies available and adds that “opening vacancies alone will not solve the serious problem of the lack of teachers”.

“Everything indicates that the advertised vacancies still do not correspond to the real needs of schools and groups”, says the union organization.
