David Pereira and Marco Costa Ferreira, both master’s students in Electrical Engineering at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão do Politécnico de Leiria, won the Accelerate Challenge 24, a competition promoted by Siemens Portugal, a company specialized in the areas of energy, industry, mobility and technologies for buildings.

With this victory, the young duo was awarded a trip to Siemens group facilities in Europe and a paid professional internship for each student.

The challenge, dedicated to undergraduate and master’s students attending higher education in Portugal, addressed the theme of energy transition, from the current industry to a more decarbonized one.

The students were challenged to create an electrical energy infrastructure project, using all the capabilities of the SIMARIS application (Design and Project), as well as other Siemens electrical network sizing tools, which were made available for this purpose.

This initiative aimed to “disclose to the national academic community the set of Siemens applications for sizing electrical networks and their potential, within the scope of engineering projects”, reads a press release.

The pair of students from the Polytechnic of Leiria formed the Brisas do Lis team, which began participating on January 3rd, when they received the challenge statement, which they resolved within two months. The finalists were announced on March 8th, with the final presentations taking place at the beginning of this week, the 18th, at Siemens headquarters in Alfragide.

Pedro Marques, professor who guided Brisas do Lis, mentioned in the statement, highlights that “these types of challenges are of great importance for the development of skills in the area of electrical installations, as if these are not properly dimensioned, an energy transition will not be possible. sustained.”

“Interconnect and manage all energy consumption and production assets, as well as charging systems for electric vehicles” are some of the solutions presented by Siemens Portugal.
