Does this video show “the elected President of Portugal” doing a “picanha dance” to make fun of Lula da Silva?

-

President-elect of Portugal make fun of petezada doing the picanha dance”, stands out over the images of the clip video that has been circulating virally on social media in Brazil since the March 10 legislative elections in Portugal. In reality, the video stars André Ventura, leader and deputy of Chega, not by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic.

But the mistake spread quickly, through thousands of video shares.

With the aggravating factor that dance is interpreted as a form of ridicule the current President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, and his supporters. “Even abroad the petezada [referência aos militantes do Partido dos Trabalhadores, de Lula da Silva] it’s a joke [troça]”, it is commented in one post on March 12th on Facebook with the video in question.

We also detected examples on other social networks such as Instagram, X/Twitter and TikTok.

The idea of mockery directed at Lula da Silva results from the lyrics of the song heard in the video, namely the following passage: “It was with a picanha chat that Lula tricked you, got chipped. You believed the lie and the picanha didn’t even arrive, it chipped.”

“The composition ironizes President Lula da Silva’s speeches during his presidential campaign. But, contrary to what the publications point out, the man in the video was not elected President of Portugal”, meanwhile warned AFP Checamos, a Brazilian fact-checking platform .

In an interview during the 2022 election campaign, the then candidate for President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, promised that “people will eat picanha again“, in reference to poverty and hunger in the country.

The video is not even current. The original version (without the caption with an indication that he is the “President-elect of Portugal”, added in this wave of shares in Brazil) was published on April 18, 2023 on Ventura’s official TikTok account.

“President Lula, don’t be fooled! You will not be welcomed at a party in Portugal”, the leader of Chega wrote in the aforementioned publication at the time.

At issue was the participation of the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, in the celebrations of the Revolution of April 25 in the Assembly of the Republic. Chega opposed the invitation to Lula da Silva to speak at the formal session.

Furthermore, Ventura guaranteed that Chega would “even organize the biggest demonstration ever against a foreign dignitary in Portugal”, mobilizing “Portuguese and Brazilians, everyone who wants to come together, to show that the center-right and the Portuguese right are not the PSD”.

Remember that Lula da Silva ended up speaking at the Assembly of the Republic, on April 25, 2023. While the President of Brazil spoke, Chega’s deputies stood up and held up posters with anti-Lula messages (“No more corruption” and “a thief’s place is in prison”, as well as Ukrainian flags).

Enough with the insultsenough of embarrassing the institutions, enough of embarrassing the name of Portugal”, shouted the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, at a moment of interruption of Lula da Silva’s speech.
