In April, the Cinemateca reaches a high point in the celebrations that, since January, it has been dedicating to the 50th anniversary of the April 25th Revolution, with a program that seeks a diversity of approaches to this unavoidable date.

The month begins with the program “Go to the Cinema in 1974” showing a series of remarkable works created, all over the world, during that year. The Cycle will have a second part in May dedicated to films produced in 1975. In collaboration with the Italian Cinema Festival, the Cinemateca will, also on the first day of April, begin the cycle entitled “The Other 25th of April”, in a program dedicated to the date that, in Italy, celebrates the Italian liberation from Nazi troops, in an inevitable dialogue with the anti-fascist struggle that also led to the Carnation Revolution.

Also noteworthy is the program “From State Cinema to Cinema Outside the State: Mozambique”, the first of several cycles that in 2024 we dedicate to three African cinematography resulting from the independence processes and Portuguese decolonization (in May, it will be Guinea’s turn and in November we pay homage to Angolan cinema).

The special program dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April begins with the inauguration of the installation “SEMPRE – A Palavra, o Dream e a Poesia na Rua” by filmmaker and visual artist Luciana Fina on the morning of the 25th of April and in various spaces around the city. Cinematheque (and which will remain until the end of June), which will be the starting point for a special program on the 25th, 26th and 27th of that month, with the screening of a set of key works of the Revolution, such as “The Armas E o Povo”, “Que Farei Eu com Esta Espada” or “Torrebela”, combined with several other lesser-known titles and even some new material with “Imagens de Abril”.

The last day of April at the Cinemateca will be exclusively dedicated to the last sessions of FILMar, which the Cinemateca has been hosting since 2020, and which now comes to an end showing the result of the project in its various components (exhibition of digitized Portuguese films, publications and DVD editions). The last day of April will also mark the launch of the Cinemateca edition Jorge Silva Melo – Living tomorrow like todaycentered on the cinema of Jorge Silva Melo.
