Jair Bolsonaro spent two nights at the Hungarian embassy in Brasília, 48 hours after having his passport seized by the Brazilian Federal Police (PF). With justice at hand in at least three police operations, the plan would be to grant political asylum to the former Brazilian president, according to anonymous sources from the European country’s embassy cited by the North American newspaper The New York Times. Viktor Orban, Hungarian Prime Minister, is an ally of Bolsonaro and has already called him a “great patriot”.

A search by the PF at Bolsonaro’s holiday home, in Angra dos Reis, on February 8 ended with the authorities requesting the former president to hand over his passport. As he didn’t have it there, Bolsonaro only handed it over on the 10th. And, on the 12th, he went to the Hungarian embassy where he spent two nights, according to images from the embassy’s video circuit, which show him greeting Ambassador Miklos Tamás, upon arrival and departure.

“I’m not going to deny that I was at the embassy. I’m not going to say where else I was. I maintain a circle of friends with some heads of state around the world. They’re worried. I talk to them about matters of interest to our country. And that’s final. The rest is speculation,” Bolsonaro told the Metrópoles newspaper.

The former Brazilian president’s legal representation only stated in a statement that “as is public knowledge, the country’s former president maintains a good relationship with the Hungarian prime minister, with whom he recently met at President Javier Milei’s inauguration, in Buenos Aires. Any other interpretations clearly constitute a fictional work, unrelated to the reality of the facts and are, in practice, just another list of fake news“.

On the UOL portal, columnist Reinaldo Azevedo said that the fact could justify “preventive arrest” due to the risk of escape.

Bolsonaro is accused of having participated in the plot of a coup d’état after losing the elections, of embezzling jewelry offered to the Brazilian state, of having forged his vaccination card to enter the United States, among other cases.
