Portugal has a consolidated tradition in triathlon of the Olympic Games. Portuguese triathletes have competed in the last five editions of the Games, only being absent from the sport’s debut in Sydney 2000. This Monday, Portugal obtained a place for Paris 2024. The presence of Portuguese representatives was announced by World Triathlon. The entity disclosed six new teams guaranteed in the mixed relay, joining three other previously confirmed teams.
Portugal’s place was secured through the World Triathlon’s Olympic ranking of mixed teams. With ninth place in the ranking, the Portuguese achieved the last of the six places offered by the classification system. In addition to the presence in the mixed team relay, Portugal also obtained places for four athletes in individual events of the triathlon in Paris 2024, with two triathletes in the men’s race and two triathletes in the women’s race.
The Portuguese Triathlon Federation informed that the choice of athletes for the relay and individual events will be made at a future date. As National Olympic Committees have exclusive authority over the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation in the Paris Games depends on their NOCs selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
France secured its place in advance in the mixed team relay, as the host country. The results of the Triathlon World Championships in 2022 and 2023 also guaranteed the presence of Great Britain and Germany. The ranking secured the places of New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, the United States, Italy and Portugal.
The triathlon mixed team relay had its first competition at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. Great Britain won gold, the United States took silver and France took bronze. Portugal did not qualify for the occasion and will make its debut in the competition in Paris 2024.
