Whatever the case, the European warrant leaves no doubt about the evidence that the Greek authorities consider Bashir to be a dangerous person: In this warrant, always in accordance with the Portuguese MP’s indictment, he is charged with the crimes of voluntary homicide and arson, for having allegedly killed his wife, Nazanin Hussain Khil, aged 27, “with coldness of mind ”, incurring “the defendant, in abstract, a sentence of life imprisonment or an effective sentence of at least ten years”.

Issued following a national arrest warrant signed by a criminal investigating judge on January 5, 2022, the document accuses Bashir of, at the Kara Tepe Reception and Identification Center (on the island of Lesbos), at two in the morning of 5 December 2019, having set fire “with a direct flame” in the container/shelter that had been assigned as a home for his family, and left “a gas cylinder next to the woman’s bed, who was sleeping”.

The narrative follows: “Meanwhile, the woman’s bed linen started to burn and he only took his three children and left the shelter and, as for his wife, instead of waking her up and taking her out of bed, he left her to die, already that this was his intention from the beginning (…). Afterwards, he made no attempt to put out the fire, and prevented his neighbor (…), from trying to put out the fire, when he saw him enter the shelter (…) with a fire extinguisher in his hands, dissuading him, telling him that the fire was large and was going to burn.” 20 minutes later, it reads, “there was an explosion inside the shelter”, in which Nazanin’s charred body would later be found.

There is no information in the indictment regarding the crimes committed at the Ismaili Center on the date of opening of the criminal case in Greece against the Afghan citizen. However, following the tragedy that occurred in Lesbos, the man, who had arrived in Greece with his family in July 2019 from Turkey (where he had lived for more than two years and where his two youngest children were born), would be transferred with his three children to the Greek mainland and ended up obtaining refugee status in November 2020, as well as residence permits for the four.

As mentioned, when an arrest warrant was issued against Bashir in Greece, he and his children were already in Portugal, where they entered, on October 19, 2021, “under the Refugee Relocation Program”.
