Maria do Carmo Fernandes, lawyer, was elected president of the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ) of Alcanena, at a meeting of the expanded Commission that took place on March 25, the municipality announced.

Representative of the Municipal Assembly in the extended Commission, under article 17, point 1, paragraph l), of Law no. 147/99, of 1 September, as amended, Maria do Carmo Fernandes has experience in the position of commissioner of the CPCJ, having held office from 07/04/12 to 11/24/2017, the authority said in a statement.

The new president of the CPCJ of Alcanena also appointed the new secretary, Isabel Carvalho, as representative of the Municipality of Alcanena, under article 17th point 1, paragraph a), of the LPPCJ, the municipality also reveals, expressing wishes for “a good mandate to the elected commissioners, for the benefit of children and young people in the municipality”.

It should be noted that the Commissions for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ) are considered “official non-judicial institutions with functional autonomy that aim to promote the rights of children and young people and prevent or put an end to situations likely to affect their safety, health, training, education or integral development”.

There is an extended commission, with representatives from various entities, institutions and security forces, and a restricted commission responsible for intervening in situations in which a child or young person is in danger.

By law, a child or young person is considered to be in danger when they are in harmful situations, namely:

It is abandoned or lives on its own;
Suffers physical or psychological abuse or is a victim of sexual abuse;
Does not receive care or affection appropriate to their age and personal situation;
Is in the care of third parties, during a period of time in which a strong bond was established with them and simultaneously with the parents not exercising their parental functions;
Is obliged to carry out activities or work that are excessive or inappropriate for their age, dignity and personal situation or harmful to their training or development;
You are subject, directly or indirectly, to behaviors that seriously affect your safety or emotional balance; between others.
