TI Portugal is one of the partners of the latest PAOLA project: the PAndora bOx of whistLeblowing in Academia , which has as objective of creating a European Observatory of Unethical Behavior in the Academic Context.

In recent years, the issue of reporting unethical behavior in European academia has increased significantly, highlighting significant challenges for the reputation of academic institutions and for students and staff. Several news reports have reported cases of abuse of power, harassment, bullying, fraud, among many other types, where students and staff face severe retaliation when reporting inappropriate conduct, from threats to expulsion from academic institutions.

In response to research that was presented during the 2023 Annual Conference of the Marie Curie Alumni Association in Córdoba, which noted that 1 in 5 academics suffers at least one unethical behavior throughout their career, the PAOLA Project was designed to create the European Observatory of Unethical Behavior in Academic Contexts.

Composed of experts from different European countries, including Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Ireland, it is funded by the National Agency Erasmus+ Education and Training and aims to create a European Observatory for Reporting Unethical Behavior in the Academic Context, promoting a culture of integrity in academia and contributing to the development of prevention and protection policies, aligned with the principles of the European Whistleblowing Directive. The PAOLA Project brings together a consortium of six partners, including TI Portugal, IFA/RUMO, Dublin City University, Bocconi University, Marie Curie Alumni Association and SciLink.

During the first year of work, this observatory will address issues associated with unethical behavior in academia such as discrimination, harassment, abuse of power, fraud, among others, promoting the discussion and implementation of good practices in the protection of physical and emotional integrity and mental health of those who report unethical behavior in the academic environment.
