The Penacova Chamber will mark National Mills Day by holding, between April 6th and 16th, a set of actions to enhance the value of mills and their traditions.

Under the motto “Grind the grain to bake the bread”, the municipality will promote several workshops to learn how to knead and bake bread in the mills of Gavinhos, Portela de Oliveira, Serra da Atalhada and in the Pisão mill, in Lorvão, open to the general public and also to the school community.

The workshops open to the public are free and take place on April 6th, Saturday, in Portela de Oliveira and on April 7th, Sunday, in Gavinhos, always starting at 10 am. The public will have the opportunity to visit a windmill, knead the flour and place the bread in the wood-fired oven. The workshops between the 8th and 16th will be dedicated to the little ones.

On April 6, the Vitorino Nemésio Moinho Museum, in the Portela de Oliveira mountain range, debuts a new space dedicated to the battle of Buçaco – “it is equipment within the scope of the Napoleonic Itineraries project, of which the municipality of Penacova is part and which, using new virtual reality technologies, allows visitors to witness some of the events of the Battle of Buçaco, namely the crossing of the Mondego River by Anglo-Portuguese troops. We decided to place this equipment here because, from Portela de Oliveira, it is possible to visit some of the emblematic sites of the battle, namely the village of Santo António do Cântaro and the Wellington command post”, explained the mayor, Álvaro Coimbra.

On Sunday, April 7th, in the windmills of Gavinhos, a Bread Fair will take place for the first time, an initiative that will bring together bakeries and pastry shops, associations and local inhabitants who still preserve the habit of baking bread or cornbread at home, in a wood-fired oven.
