Doctors expect the Minister of Health to negotiate in a “serious and transparent” way

The president of National Federation of Doctors (FNAM)Joana Bordalo e Sá, hopes that the new Minister of HealthAna Paula Martins, negotiate with professionals in the sector in a serious and transparent way.

The former president of the Order of Pharmacists Ana Paula Martins will be the new Minister of Health, after resigning in December from her position as president of the board of directors of Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte.

“We hope that Ana Paula Martins has a correct vision for National Health Servicewhich favors dialogue with doctors, with FNAM and that negotiations can begin as soon as possible, which are serious, transparent, without manipulations and without behind-the-scenes games, a strategy followed by the former ministerial team”, he told the agency Lusa is responsible.”

“We need a seriousness, fair wages and decent working conditions so that patients have the best care in the SNS and that the SNS can thus recover medical staff”, he said, highlighting the importance of keeping doctors motivated and working as a team “to be able to stop the flight of doctors to the private sector or for emigration”.

Wishing Ana Paula Martins “a good mandate”, the FNAM leader highlighted that “health, in Portugal, is done with SNS doctors and not with consultation or surgery vouchers for the private sector”, ensuring that it will “continue to fight to have doctors in the NHS.”

Order of Doctors highlights the new minister’s capacity for dialogue and work

The Order of Doctors highlighted the capacity for dialogue and work of the new Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, characteristics that it considers “very relevant” to respond to challenges such as providing a family doctor to all Portuguese people.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the president of the Order of Doctors (OM), Carlos Cortes, began by saying that, “more than personalities, what is truly important” is knowing “the Government’s program and how it will be fulfilled.”

“But in relation to the person, because it is also important, there is also another issue that is always very relevant, which is the management of expectations and, above all, when these expectations are high”, he said, considering that Ana Paula Martins, pharmacist, has characteristics that OM considers them “to be very positive”.
