Ft was a year ago that the country was shocked by the attack on the Ismaili Center. Adbul Bashir – now accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of 11 crimes – killed two women with a knife he carried with him.

Mariana Jadaugy, one of the victims, was 24 years old. She had a degree in Political Sciences and International Relations from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a master’s degree in Human Sciences from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão of the University of Lisbon.

Since 2022, she has worked as a humanitarian assistant at Focus. She helped refugees to integrate into Portuguese society.

Farana Sadrudin graduated in Computer Engineering from the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal. Aged 49, she was the manager and main person responsible for the Focus Europa foundation, a humanitarian assistance association that was partly dedicated to welcoming refugees in Portugal.

Abdul Bashir, aged 27, had been in Portugal for around a year with his three minor children – aged 9, 7 and 4 – when he committed the crime. He was a regular presence at the Ismaili Center, the place where he held his hand when he arrived in Portugal, and where he took Portuguese classes.

It is not known for sure what motivated the crime, but the prosecution’s order states that Abdul Bashir sent several messages to the victims, insisting that they help him. In one of the messages, Adbul said he loved one of the women he killed.

European arrest warrant on suspicion of woman’s death

According to information on his Linkedin page, Abdul worked as a telecommunications technician in Kabul.

He arrived in Greece, in a refugee camp, in 2019. It is, however, in Lesbos, that Abdul’s story becomes (even) darker. There he lost his wife, arriving in Portugal two years later.

The order from the Public Prosecutor’s Office consulted by the Observer reveals that Abdul Bashir was a suspect in the woman’s death in Greece. He changed his name shortly before traveling to Portugal, which is why he was granted refugee status while still in Greece and was not linked to the European arrest warrant issued by the Greek authorities in his name.

Abdul is suspected of having set fire to the container where he slept in the refugee camp on Lesbos, causing his wife’s death.

Man is accused of 11 crimes and was considered unaccountable

The Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP) filed charges against Abdul Bashir three days before the one-year mark of the tragedy, accusing the man of Afghan nationality with two counts of aggravated murder, six counts of attempted aggravated murder, two crimes of resistance and coercion against an employee and a crime of possession of a prohibited weapon.

As explained by DCIAP, “the defendant suffered, at the time of the facts and, still, suffers from a psychological anomaly, from the outset a psychiatric condition of schizophrenia and a mixed personality disorder, namely narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder”, which is why a declaration of non-imputability was requested.

For DCIAP, there is a high probability that the defendant will commit other crimes of the same nature, “which is why DCIAP also requested the judicial application of an internment security measure”.

The investigation was led by DCIAP, with the assistance of the Judicial Police – Counter Terrorism Unit. The defendant, it should be noted, is subject to the coercive measure of preventive hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital.
