In the Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC), the jubilation session of Teresa Pedroso de Lima will take place on Friday, April 5th, at 5 pm.

The Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra gives the last lesson, entitled “People, Mathematics and the University”.

The moment, according to FEUC, will be a “deserved tribute and fair recognition for his long work of dedication to the University of Coimbra in general and to the FEUC community in particular”.

The program is opened by the director of FEUC, Álvaro Garrido, and with interventions by teachers from the Mathematics nucleus at FEUC, Pedro Cerqueira and Humberto Rocha. The session will also feature testimony from students from the Faculty.

Teresa Pedroso de Lima has a degree in Mathematics (scientific branch) from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), the city where she also completed her high school teaching internship, at the Liceu Nacional de José Falcão. She continued her studies with a master’s degree in Linear Algebra and Applications (FCTUC), a doctorate and an aggregation in Economics, specializing in Mathematical Economics / Econometric Models, at the Faculty of Economics of the same University (FEUC).

In 1979 she was hired as an assistant by FEUC, where she is currently a full professor. She has held several academic management roles. She was director of FEUC from October 9, 2015 to February 19, 2020. She presided over the Faculty Assembly (from July 2009 to July 2013) and the General Assembly of the Association for University Extension/APEU (from April 2005 to May 2015 ), after having been president of the Pedagogical Council (from May 2006 to October 2009), of the Scientific Council (from February 1994 to March 1996) and vice-president of the Board of Directors (from May 1991 to June 1993). She was also a member of the General Council (from June 2011 to November 2012) and the Bologna Observatory (from October 2007 to March 2011) of the University of Coimbra.

For almost 20 years he assumed responsibility for the subject of Mathematics I of the Degrees in Economics and Management. Following the Bologna Reform, he coordinated the teaching team for the curricular units of Linear Algebra (from 2007 to 2015), Introduction to Quantitative Methods (from 2007 to 2012) and Mathematics II (from 2013 to 2015). He developed his scientific work (through conferences, publications and thesis supervision) in the area of applied linear algebra (namely, proper structure of matrices, bundles of matrices and commutative matrices) and mathematical systems theory (in particular, discrete linear systems in descriptor form and positive systems), being particularly interested in applications in economics.

It has recently focused its activity on two lines of action. On the one hand, it has invested in the study of matrix measures for non-negative matrices and their use in quantifying economic complexity as interdependence. On the other hand, he has dedicated himself to teaching mathematics to non-mathematicians and writing texts with the aim of raising students and researchers’ awareness of the importance that this discipline assumes in social issues and alerting them to “the use, non-use, misuse and abuse that is constantly made of it”.
