University of Lisbon will build residence with 200 beds

A University of Lisbon (UL) will build a new university residence with 200 beds, an investment of more than five million euros and scheduled to open in 2026.

The construction was approved in a resolution by the Council of Ministers on March 27, the last one led by António Costa and with the participation of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The rector of UL, Luís Ferreira, told Lusa that the new university residence should come into operation “in the 1st half of 2026” and that approval by the Council of Ministers “does not represent financing from the Government”, but only an authorization for the work, which will be supported by the university’s own funds.

Luis Ferreira, however, left open the possibility of obtaining “partial financing of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR)”.

Asked about the problem of student accommodation in Lisbon, the rector of UL explained that the opening of the new residence does not “in any way” resolve the housing crisisbut it is “a contribution to meeting needs”.

The new university residence in Lisbon will be located on Avenida das Forças Armadas, next to Cidade Universitária.
