Transdisciplinary researcher and artist Tiago Cadete presents “Concerto”, a show that puts the public on stage to listen to a “ghostly concert of voices” with the particularity that everyone involved in this artistic creation was a migrant.

The show has a double session, on April 5th – 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm.

“An empty audience serves as a stage for 20 speakers, which broadcast a concert of multiple voices from Latin American migrants living in Portugal and Spain. From questions like ‘Who are the new migrants?’ and ‘What desires do they have when they migrate to the country that colonized them?” Concerto continues Tiago Cadete’s line of theatrical, visual and sound research, which challenges a critical look at the historical relationship between Portugal and Latin America”, explains Theatro Circo, in a statement.

This new project takes the form of a large-scale installation. This “migrant symphony”, as critics call it, began to take shape under the program Stronger Peripheries: The Southern Coalition under the motto “having a voice” [ter voz].

“Concerto” is part of the themes that Tiago Cadete has been developing in recent years: History; Memory; Identity; Migration. His experience of working with migratory groups initially comes from having migrated to Brazil. In this show, the researcher was encouraged to work on this geographical place and the power and/or absence of it in the voices of these people.

The show begins with the collection of Latin American migrants who live in the country that their ancestral spaces once colonized. For “Concerto”, this creation was born from listening to testimonies both in Portugal and in Spain.

For the show in Braga, an ‘open call’ was opened for local testimonies with the same historical and social characteristics. Tiago Cadete expects an “acoustic experience inside a theater, therefore, there are no actors, there are no participants, there are no performers physically, that is, with their body”.

The creator intends to create a space in which there is space for empathy between the voices and the audience that sits on the stage, proposing “an inversion of both the point of view or listening point of people who are normally in the place of seeing something, will be in a place to be seen. Therefore, there is a kind of reflection/counterreflection here that increases this impact”.
