Stroke continues to be one of the main causes of death in Portugal, also leading in morbidity and potential years of life lost in all cardiovascular diseases.

A stroke is a sudden neurological deficit, caused by ischemia (deficiency of blood supply) or hemorrhage in the brain. To prevent the disease, healthy lifestyle habits must be adopted, tobacco and a sedentary lifestyle must be avoided and special attention must be paid to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or cardiac arrhythmias.

The main warning signs of a stroke, which require an immediate call to 112, are facial deviation, lack of strength in one arm and difficulty speaking.

The first hours after the onset of stroke symptoms are essential for helping the victim, as this is the time window that guarantees the effectiveness of the main treatments.
