There is a group of activists from the Liberal Initiative (IL) who are encouraging Tiago Mayan to move against Rui Rocha’s leadership. At stake are the results of the last electoral act, in which the party, despite having retained its eight deputies, lost in Lisbon – considered the main bastion of IL – but won in Aveiro. An appeal that seems to be convincing Mayan – founder of the Liberal Initiative and who in his candidacy for the 202 presidential election received 134,427 votes, placing 6th in the vote – who has already said on social media that “the bodies’ time is running out and The time for members to define the future direction of the party begins».

Remember that the elections for the party leadership are scheduled for January, as according to the statutes of the Liberal Initiative, elections are held every two years.

This alternative to the presidency of the party gained greater contours after the National Council of the Liberal Initiative that took place this Sunday, in which another point had been added to the agenda. Alongside the assessment of the party’s results in the March 10th election, and the next European elections, a third point was added to the debate, related to the political positioning on the various government scenarios, as well as the deliberation on the proposed recommendation to management. An issue that was meanwhile clarified by the PSD and IL during this week when they informed that they will not move forward “at this time towards the celebration of broad understandings”, including those relating to the formation of the new Government and which was in line with what had been defended by the majority of advisors who, from what Nascer do SOL found, did not want a coalition or a presence in the Government.

From what our newspaper found, tempers flared at this meeting with the exchange of accusations between Rodrigo Saraiva, who has now been appointed vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic, and Rafael Corte Real, who was part of João Cotrim de Figueiredo’s Executive Committee. and was one of Carla Castro’s main supporters in the internal dispute in which Rui Rocha emerged victorious, after questioning whether “it was worth reducing this party to a sect, made up of indefectibles”.

The atmosphere became tense again with Rui Rocha’s closing speech, which harshly criticized those who questioned the party’s results in the legislative elections. «No one called for Rui Rocha to resign, nor did he make the call that ‘you’re president and the result was your fault’ and, even though there was some criticism regarding the party’s result, instead of having a conciliatory spirit, it had an adversarial spirit» , an IL source told our newspaper.
