Therefore, concludes the JS leader, “the President of the Republic, who chose to create this new parliamentary context, cannot now want to revert to a parliamentary context in which there was stability”, given that “it was he himself who chose to end this context parliamentary”.

“He created the situation, now he has to live with it. It’s the law of life”, concludes Costa Matos, who adds: “Our commitment is not to the President of the Republic, because he was not the one who elected us, it is to the Portuguese”.

A Government with “radicalized positions”

Regarding the Government of Luís Montenegro, which takes office this Tuesday, Miguel Costa Matos recognizes that he has political muscle, this is the “hard core” of the AD leader and this could even be “an advantage”.

If there are ministers with a political profile, it is possible that they have “a different ability to negotiate and be able to demonstrate political options”, concludes Costa Matos. But the socialist is also surprised by the Government’s structure, which he accuses of “taking a strange option”. That of valuing Youth while “annulling the autonomous existence of the Ministry of Higher Education and Housing”. For the socialist, it is “a rocket, a little inconsequential”.

Costa Matos also criticizes choices that “reflect a Government turned in on itself” and anticipates new episodes such as the choice for President of Parliament, describing a government that is “arrogant and unprepared, that does not seek out others, that thinks it is self-sufficient to govern”.

The socialist leader also anticipates “radicalized and worrying positions” from future members of the Government. That of the Minister of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, who “was against increases in the Minimum Wage and against public financing of Higher Education”.

Costa Matos also gives the example of the future Minister of Defense, Nuno Melo, who the socialist leader accuses of defending “the widespread use of weapons, at a time when military leaders are threatening a return to compulsory military service”.
