This afternoon, at the Braga Court, the last session of the discussion and trial hearing took place in the case in which João Gomes is accused of attempted extortion of SAD from Sporting de Braga, in the person of the president of Minho, António Salvador.

The case dates back to February 2018, with the club instituting disciplinary proceedings against the then general director, with a view to his dismissal, which came to fruition a few weeks later.

Sporting de Braga then revealed that João Gomes tried to coerce the club with “the threat of disclosing unfounded facts in an attempt to extort from the club or SAD” 250 thousand euros, a Mercedes-Benz car worth 60 thousand euros and which he unemployment benefit was granted with the end of the employment relationship, all within a maximum period of 24 hours.

After interviewing witnesses, and according to information from the hearing session to which Lusa had access, the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) highlighted “the verisimilitude of the testimony of President António Salvador, as well as, in particular, of the witnesses listed by SC Braga SAD”, pointing out “contradictions and inaccuracies in the defense presented and the defendant João Gomes’ thesis”.

In the end, the MP asked for the defendant to be sentenced to prison for three years, suspended upon payment of 2500 euros to a social security institution to be designated.

The sentence is scheduled to be read on April 11th.
