A fire that broke out this Wednesday afternoon in a bread factory in Rio Maior caused part of the building to collapse and forced the evacuation of 94 workers, said a source from the Lezíria do Tejo sub-regional command.

“The flames are consuming the roof area of ​​the building, affecting the entire area of ​​the factory, from production to administrative services, having already destroyed part of the factory”, said the second sub-regional commander of Lezíria do Tejo, Rodrigo Bertelo .

The factory, belonging to Sociedade Panificadora Costa & Ferreira, is located in the town of Alto da Serra and has 240 workers, of which 94 were working and “had to be removed”, said Rodrigo Bertelo.

Also according to the second commander, “three workers were treated on site for smoke inhalation”, with no further injuries reported.

The alert was given at 1:10 pm and, by 2:30 pm, 18 vehicles and 45 employees from the corporations of Rio Maior, Caldas da Rainha, Alcoentre, Benedita, Óbidos, Cartaxo, Alcanede and Voluntários de Santarém were on site.

There were also members of the GNR and the Rio Maior Chamber at the scene.
