In 1885, by royal decree, the Braga School of Industrial Design was created. For almost 160 years the name, the pedagogical project and even the location of the establishment changed, but since 1978 it has been called Escola Secundária Carlos Amarante.
It is precisely within the scope of the celebrations of ESCA’s 140th anniversary, which will be completed in 2025, that we pay tribute to all the former directors who contributed to the history of this educational institution.
The tribute took place yesterday afternoon, in the Carlos Amarante room, but is also immortalized in the corridor leading to the Directorate’s offices, where pictures were placed with the names of all directors, since 1885, and photographs of the 13 most recent directors.
“It is a huge satisfaction to promote this tribute”, confessed Hortense Santos, who took over the direction of ESCA in 2002, today leading the Directorate of the Carlos Amarante Group.
In addition to Hortense Santos, on the wall that pays homage to the directors there are also photographs of Miguel Lacerda, Jorge Segismundo Lima, António Losa Júnior, Luís José Bandeira, Domingos Neto, António Ferreira, Joaquim Pacheco, Jorge Fernandes, Alberto Figueiredo, Maria Engrácia Fernandes, Natália Catarino and António Jorge Carvalho. There is no photo, but it also contains the names of the directors who were at the beginning of this school, specifically between 1885 and 1923: Bernardino Passos, Francisco Carvalho, João da Costa Lima Eduardo Monteverde and Domingos Barbosa.
Hortense Santos highlighted “the great drive” of Professor Domingos Araújo to achieve this tribute.
Precisely Domingos Araújo treated those present with a presentation on the history and evolution of this educational establishment and each of its directors.
In this session, the highlight was the performance of a group of ESCA students who treated those present with the interpretation of some musical themes.
As part of this tribute as part of the 140th anniversary of ESCA, emphasis is also placed on the many initiatives that celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April and which are throughout the school. In the Carlos Amarante room, for example, there is a display of vinyl records about songs from April, as well as some editorial publications. In every nook and corner, we find motifs that celebrate Freedom.
