PS deputy Ana Seiça Neves called for more measures to decongest traffic in the ‘bridge square’ area, as well as the need to regulate pedestrian circulation. The president said that residents must have alternative routes and announced that the Municipal Police will continue to help during times of greater flow of people, especially at pedestrian crossings.

In the last session of the Municipal Assembly, the elected socialist took the floor to “alert about what all Aveirenses know” happening in the city: “chaotic traffic” along the central canal, which worsens with each more usual holiday period with the arrival of tourists. “So at Easter time… luckily they had the idea of having the police direct traffic, on the bridges, it was well thought out, but it remains chaotic, despite all the things that have been done” in the area. After the requalification works on Avenida Lourenço Peixinho, the roundabout was redesigned, accompanied by the renovation of Rua João Mendonça (these two as part of the requalification of Rossio).

“Furthermore”, complained Ana Seiça Neves, “pedestrians cross anywhere and at any time, even where they cannot”. The ‘pink’ member admitted that “it’s great to bring tourists here and lots of people to visit” the city, “but there has to be some way for us to walk calmly, to sort out our things, to do our lives”, she asked. .

He also questioned the progress of works on Avenida Mário Sacramento, “one of the entry and exit routes in the city, with those works that narrow the circulation route”. Work, he noted, that “is taking a long time”, “naturally” provoking complaints from residents.

In his response, the President of the Chamber placed some reservations on the panorama outlined regarding city traffic. “It is not realistic, or rather, it does not reflect reality well, to say that traffic is chaotic,” he said.

“I advise all of us, on a daily basis, not to go on the bridges, which have the structure they do”, he said, although considering that traffic “is not congested at many times of the day”.

Ribau Esteves added that the Municipal Police will continue “to help with fluidity”, especially in pedestrian crossing areas. A measure that was “rehearsed and went well”. Furthermore, “we will continue to encourage regular users to use other circuits”, knowing that “those who come for work or trips use the most central areas”.

Regarding the works on Avenida Mário Sacramento, he said that “they will end in July” but before that “they will get even worse”, as it will be necessary to close traffic for a few days for paving. An intervention that spared some of the trees, unlike other works. The mayor maintains that these are duly thought out options: “The good ones stay, the bad ones leave”.

Direct speech

“I still remember that I had never seen queues at the ‘Rato’ roundabout, 10 years ago, now we do. It was a good thing it didn’t happen, we lost a few minutes. We now have the project to level the EN 109. It’s good, it means we are growing, there are more people living, coming to shop, these are positive notes from the more restricted traffic. JIt’s no longer the ‘Aveirinho’ that quickly arrived everywhere, now there are more people coming, doing tourism, living here” – Ribau Esteves.
