The governor of the Bank of Portugal inaugurated today, at the bank’s branch in Faro, the exhibition “Let us, ordinary citizens, take the floor and take the initiative”, accompanied by the president of the José Saramago Foundation, Pilar del Rio.
The exhibition was on display for the first time last December in Lisbon to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 25th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Saramago and, also, to raise awareness of the Universal Charter of Duties and Obligations of Human Beings .
On the occasion, the governor of Banco de Portugal, Mário Centeno, highlighted, in the brief statements he made to journalists, that the exhibition “demonstrates the importance that the institution has given to its relationship with the community”.
“So let us, ordinary citizens, take the floor and take the initiative. With the same vehemence and the same strength with which we claim our rights, let us also claim the duty of our duties. Maybe the world can start to become a little better”, said José Saramago, in Stockholm, in 1998.
Present at the inauguration in Faro, the widow of the Portuguese Nobel laureate and president of the Saramago Foundation, Pilar del Rio, lamented that the Universal Charter of Duties and Obligations of Human Beings, which originated in the writer’s appeal made in the Stockholm speech, has not yet the desired visibility.
The exhibition with images by Spanish photojournalist Gervasio Sánchez will then tour other district capitals where Banco de Portugal has branches.
Later this afternoon, Mário Centeno returns to the land where he lived until he was 15, Vila Real de Santo António, to give an open class at the city’s Secondary School.
