Liceu Pedro Nunes, in Lisbon, defends “appropriate clothing” and prohibits low-cut necklines, short shorts and flip-flops

At Liceu Pedro Nunes, in Lisbon, it is not permitted to wear excessive necklines, short shorts or flip-flops. The notice was given by the school management and sent by email to those in charge of education. The parents’ association agrees, but there are guardians who criticize the measure.

The email with the new dress code was signed by director Maria do Rosário Andorinha and prohibits “short shorts, excessive cleavage and beach shoes”.

If the rules are not followed during national exams, students may even be banned from taking them. The management responded to SIC by email and said that “schools have the autonomy to define their internal regulations, defending themselves with the law that obliges students to wear “appropriate clothing”.

Students say that clothing control has been going on for several years and that there are distinctions between boys and girls. The management says that the parents’ association agrees with the new rules, but the opinion is not general.

To the Observer, the Ministry of Education says it is unaware of the decision taken by the school, but remembers that “schools define their internal regulations” and that the “specific dress rules are not the result of general guidelines from the Ministry of Education”.
